How to make a chore chart that lasts

  • Keep it short. Three to five chores per child is plenty for a week. A chart with twelve boxes a day is forgotten by Wednesday.
  • Match the chores to the age. A five-year-old can put toys away and help set the table. A ten-year-old can unload the dishwasher and take out the trash on set days.
  • Hang it where the work happens. On the fridge or by the kids' room, at their eye level, with a pen next to it.
  • Look at it together once a week. Sunday evening works for many families: count the checks, talk about what went well and print next week's chart.
