A video call about the group assignment: agree an outcome and an end

3 min read

Three pupils are preparing a short presentation and want to talk after school. “We are just planning” says little about what will be decided when the call ends. Before your child joins, find a framework that suits both the assignment and the evening at home. It does not need to become an adult-run meeting agenda.

Choose one decision the call should produce

Ask your child to show the school’s assignment and what the group has already agreed. They may only need to divide three topics or choose the question their presentation will answer. If the aim is to finish the whole assignment, first check whether that amount of time is actually available.

A possible opening is: “We have until six. Before we finish, I would like us to decide who does each part.” Your child can suggest this to the group. Other pupils may have different home commitments, so the time needs confirmation rather than an announcement assuming everyone is free.

Give the call a place at home

Agree where your child can hear the group and how long the space is available. If a sibling needs the same table, include that in the home arrangement. Do not move another person’s unfinished work without asking.

Lea uses a small table from 5.30 to six. The family agrees to keep the room quiet during the call. That applies to the adult who would otherwise make a phone call beside her too. A quiet period that also applies to adults can make the arrangement understandable.

Lea has paper and the assignment ready. She does not need to search old messages during the call to remember what the group was meant to do.

Record the agreement before hanging up

The group finishes with three lines:

  • Lea finds two examples for the first section.
  • Amir makes the sketch the group selected.
  • Liv collects the questions they will take to the teacher.

They note when each part should be ready and where it belongs under the school’s instructions. If two pupils understand a role differently, this is the moment to ask, rather than letting an adult complete the missing agreement afterwards.

Someone with an idea for another person’s section asks before changing it. Contributing without taking over someone else’s work also matters in a school project.

When the time is up and the decision is made, the call can end even if everyone still wants to chat. A new social call does not need the assignment as its excuse all evening. Let your child show their own next action, while the rest of the group keeps its agreement.
