Choose the pictures for the family’s small slideshow together
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni2 min read
You want to view twelve holiday pictures together at home. The adult has already chosen all twelve. Your child misses the picture of a funny sign, but appears in three pictures they do not want shown. Before calling the slideshow a family project, you can open the selection itself to the family.
Set the scope first
Clarify whether you are making a short show for those at home or something you want to send to others. These are different agreements. In this example, the pictures are only for the living room; nobody has agreed to further sharing.
Try this small allocation:
| Part of the selection | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Personal favourites | Each person suggests two pictures |
| Shared moments | Family chooses the remaining places |
| Pictures someone does not want included | Remove before deciding the order |
If someone has many favourites, put them on a separate suggestions list. A large camera archive need not become a long evening.
Ask before giving a picture a story
The person choosing the sign can explain what was funny. Avoid adding an embarrassing story about someone else merely because you remember it. Someone may want a picture shown without explaining everything that happened that day.
Ask whether people want to talk along the way or simply watch. Your child can provide one brief comment for the adult to read without becoming presenter for the whole family.
Review before showing
Let everyone see the finished selection. If your child asks to remove a picture of themselves, look for another image rather than deciding by majority vote. A shorter slideshow is possible; all twelve spaces need not be filled.
If a relative later asks for the file, ask those affected again. Agreeing to watch together at home is not an established yes to this new sharing. Avoid sending first and asking afterwards.
In the example, the sign gets a place and two unwanted pictures are replaced with views. The useful experiment is not producing the most impressive presentation. It is giving the family an actual say in the moments you share with each other and considering a request to leave a picture out before the show begins.
