The coffee table: an owner tray that actually gets emptied

2 min read

The coffee table may gather a book, cup, little toys and notes from several people. An empty surface achieves little if everything simply moves into a new pile. Use a small owner tray for uncertain objects and deliver known items directly. This task covers the agreed table section without moving fixed decoration or other adult-selected objects.

Agree what stays on the table

An adult identifies the table's permanent items and the surface to clear. The child moves only agreed, easily handled loose objects. Cleaning the table material can be a separate task; arrange returns first.

Start with cups and ordinary tableware that have a known kitchen home. Books retain bookmarks and loose sheets in their existing order before delivery to the owner's correct location. Remotes follow their fixed home. Avoid putting everything on the tray when its destination is already known.

Use the tray for questions, rather than everything

An unfamiliar note or small possession can wait on the tray while the child tells an adult. Keep different owners' objects in little clear groups without reading private notes aloud. Note where the object was found if needed.

When owners have agreed locations, deliver their groups there. A tray carried around and then returned full to the table has not solved today's task. Uncertain contents go to the adult's decision area.

Nina finds a cup, her brother's book and two unfamiliar small objects on the agreed surface. The cup goes to the kitchen. The book goes to her brother's shelf with its bookmark retained. The two small objects go on the tray and are handed to an adult with their table location explained. The surface now has room for ordinary table use.

When an owner's space is full

Avoid pushing the item behind everything else. Report that its known home has no room and hand it into the agreed decision area. The child does not have to clear somebody else's shelf to finish this job.

Finished means the agreed surface free, known items delivered and the owner tray emptied by handover. “Return loose coffee-table items” in Kroni has a visible ending even when an adult still needs to identify an owner.
