Empty clothes hangers: give them a home in the wardrobe

3 min read

Empty hangers between clothes make it hard to see what is actually in the wardrobe. They can also hook together when a child reaches for a jumper. A small station for spare hangers gives the child a clear job and makes the next load of clean clothes easier to put away.

Choose a section of the rail the child can reach from the floor. It might be at one end or beside a divider. An adult should arrange another solution if the rail is too high. The task needs to work without climbing onto a chair.

Take only completely empty hangers

Move one hanger at a time. First check for a thin garment, scarf or pair of trousers hanging from it. A hanger with something on it is not empty, even if it looks available from the side. Leave clothes where they are; this is not a review of what the child wears.

Place empty hangers flat on the bed or hold them together in a small bundle. If they are caught together, release the outermost one first. Pulling hard on the whole bundle usually makes the tangle worse.

Group by use rather than appearance

Hang ordinary shirt hangers together in the chosen space. Trouser hangers with clips can form a separate small group so the child can find them without trying several kinds. Keep the clips closed while moving the hangers.

An adult decides what to do with broken hangers or loose parts. Set these aside and mention them. The child does not need to repair anything or decide which hangers other household members should use.

Test the arrangement with one garment

Take a clean shirt that belongs in the wardrobe. Can the child find a suitable hanger, hang the shirt and place it among the other clothes without moving the entire collection? If so, the station works. If not, bring the spare hangers closer to the opening or reduce the number of groups.

A wardrobe example

Jonas finds seven empty hangers in his wardrobe. Five are ordinary hangers and two have trouser clips. He gathers them into two groups on the right. A broken hanger goes on the chest of drawers for his dad to examine. Jonas then hangs up a shirt, leaving the remaining spare hangers together.

When spare hangers take over

A large reserve can crowd out the clothes. Agree how many spare hangers the child needs inside the wardrobe. An adult can store the remainder elsewhere.

Finished means empty hangers are together, clothes remain in place and the child can take one spare hanger without a tangle. Use that short description in Kroni if helpful. A weekly check may be enough when empty hangers otherwise return straight to their station.
