High-visibility vests: sort the sizes and make the right vest easy to find

2 min read

A basket of high-visibility vests becomes awkward when every vest is rolled into an identical bundle. A child can sort the household's familiar vests by size and return them with labels visible. An adult decides fit, condition and which vests should be used. Sorting helps find the right vest rather than certifying safety equipment.

Start with familiar household vests

Take the vests from the agreed basket. Use a table or low bench rather than the floor beside the entrance. Put wet vests in the household's agreed drying area. Do not squeeze them between dry ones just to clear the table.

Read the size label with an adult the first time. Colour or appearance alone does not establish who a vest fits. Make small groups for the sizes the family actually owns. An unreadable label belongs in a separate decision area.

Arrange them for the next person

Fold only enough to fit the basket without hiding every size label. Vests can stand in low rows with a simple size card in front. Keep the basket accessible without blocking the walkway or door.

For personal vests, use names by agreement. For shared vests, size labels may suffice. Do not assign a vest to another child merely because it belongs to a size group; an adult checks actual fit before use.

Mina finds five vests: two small, two larger and a wet one with an unknown size. She makes two dry rows and tells an adult where the wet one waits. The basket is useful even while one vest needs a decision.

When the basket becomes another pile

Too many vests may be occupying too little space. Report that rather than forcing them down. An adult chooses an additional home or which vests should remain accessible.

Finished means known dry sizes visible, wet vests in the drying area and uncertainties reported. “Sort the high-visibility vests” in Kroni can describe those three checks. Approval checks storage; an adult retains the assessment before actual use.
