Laundry bags between washes: empty them and check the zips
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni3 min read
A laundry bag still containing a sock is not ready when the next garment needs it. A zip that no longer moves normally may also be noticed too late. A child can check the household's empty laundry bags between washes and give ready bags one home.
Gather only bags already handled through your laundry routine. This task does not decide which garments need bags, temperatures or wash programmes. An adult makes those choices following the clothes' and bags' guidance.
Open one bag over the table
Lay the bag on a clean surface and open its zip gently. Look right into the corners. A small garment may lie flat along an edge and be difficult to spot from the opening alone.
Remove finds into a separate group. A known clean garment can return to its normal home. An unfamiliar part, button or unidentified object stays on the tray for review. Do not shake every bag into one large pile.
Try the zip without contents
Move the zip along its usual path and back. If it stops, look for fabric or thread caught inside. The child can report this and set the bag aside rather than pulling harder.
If a bag has a flap or holder for its zip, check that part as an adult has demonstrated. You do not need to repair anything during inspection. Knowing which bags are not ready for ordinary use is enough.
Look for holes and allow complete drying
Hold an empty bag flat against the table and inspect visible seams and mesh. Put bags with clear holes or loose seams in the “Review” section. An adult decides on repair or replacement.
Damp bags remain at the drying place. Dry, checked bags can lie flat in a drawer or existing container with their openings accessible. Label sizes if the household uses them for different garment groups.
An example with four bags
Leon checks four bags. In the first, he finds a clean sock that returns to his clothes. Two bags are empty and work normally. The fourth has a loose seam and waits for review. Three bags are ready, with large ones behind and the small one at the front.
If bags keep disappearing among clean clothes
Agree that they are emptied and returned to their own space before clothes are put away. A bag without a clear return can enter a drawer alongside the garment it protected. A picture of its home may help with the first round.
Finished means each agreed bag is emptied, its zip checked and ready bags separated from waiting ones. Describe this in Kroni if you use tasks there. A bag needing review can be reported without the child having to fix it before the check is approved.
