Notebooks in use: a visible shelf for current work

2 min read

A new notebook and an almost full one can have the same cover. Stored together without any label, they may require opening several books to find today's work. Make a small home for notebooks currently in use and another agreed location for the rest. This job covers books on one work surface, rather than the family's entire paper collection.

The child chooses what is current

Lay out the books with their covers visible. Ask which ones are still used for writing, drawing or an ongoing project. A book containing many blank pages is not automatically new, and a full one is not automatically finished. Avoid reading private pages to decide its group.

Let the child identify today's book by its cover. Add a short label to an agreed loose note or cover position, such as “Drawing now”. If the child does not want a label on the book, label its storage space instead. Leave the contents untouched.

Make a short active row

Place current notebooks in an accessible area where reserve books cannot hide them. Keep an existing project grouping if it works. Finished books go together to agreed storage, while uncertain books receive their own small waiting pile.

Ida has two matching blue notebooks. One contains the continuation of a story; the other is finished. The story book goes in the active row with a loose “Story now” note. The finished book goes to the archive location. Ida can retrieve the correct notebook using the label alone.

When every book seems current

Choose together which books are needed at this working area now. Others may still be in use, but in another agreed location. Today's storage task should not require the child to finish projects. For an uncertain book, simply note what needs deciding.

Finished means a recognisable active group, the remaining books delivered to their homes and one correct retrieval and return. “Put current notebooks away” in Kroni can end with that trial. No pages need to be torn out or completed.
