Two pencil lengths: keep the short ones visible

2 min read

A short pencil disappears easily inside a tall cup of long pencils. Finding it often means tipping out the entire cup. Instead, make two length groups for one collection. This task is about access: a short, usable pencil should be easy to find without having to match the length of its neighbours.

Choose a practical dividing point

Put the pencils from one cup or compartment on the table. Separate markers and pens first; they return to their usual homes. Keep coloured pencils and writing pencils in the groups you already use.

Let the child hold one of the short pencils as they would when drawing. A pencil that is comfortable to use can stay, even if it is short. Choose it as a simple length example. Pencils roughly that short or shorter go in a shallow space. Longer pencils can return to the usual cup.

Separate storage from sharpening

Look at the tip without testing every pencil on paper. A pencil needing sharpening goes in the agreed sharpening group. Follow your household's normal routine for the sharpening itself, with help if appropriate. This storage task does not automatically become a job of sharpening every pencil.

Put broken pieces that can no longer be held properly aside for an adult. If the child still wants to use a particular short pencil, it should not be put there simply because of its length.

Ada finds four short coloured pencils at the bottom of the cup. She puts them in a low compartment in front of the long ones. Two pencils without points sit on a small note marked “Sharpening”. She can retrieve the short green pencil without emptying the long ones, and knows which two need another step.

When the shallow space fills up too

Arrange pencils so that their tips are not hidden under several layers. If they do not all fit, agree a reserve group rather than introducing another tall cup that hides short pencils again. A group can contain only a few pencils and still be useful.

Finished means two visible length groups, an identified sharpening group and one easy retrieval. Use “Sort the pencils by length” in Kroni, finishing with a trial of retrieving a short pencil.
