Rain changes the outing: ask before announcing another family activity
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni2 min read
You arranged a walk to look at neighbourhood buildings. When it is time to leave, heavy rain leads the adults to cancel for now. You find a board game and announce: “The whole family will play instead.” Your child, who looked forward to the walk, had not agreed to the game.
First explain what changes
“We are not doing that walk this morning” is clear. Give the practical explanation without treating the new suggestion as settled. Your child can be disappointed about the outing even if you have a pleasant idea ready.
Distinguish the cancelled agreement from alternatives:
| Plan | Status |
|---|---|
| Neighbourhood walk | Cancelled for this morning |
| Board game at home | Suggestion participants need to answer |
| Walk another day | Not arranged yet |
Avoid promising tomorrow before checking it.
Keep only the constraint that still applies
Perhaps the family still has an hour available at home. Say: “I can spend time with you until eleven. We can choose something we want.” That offers ordinary availability, not a requirement to programme the whole hour.
One child may want to draw the buildings they intended to see. Another wants the game. Ask whether a brief shared part works or you do different things. A suggested alternative need not win because the adult found it first.
Give the new attempt an ending
If you choose a game, establish which one and roughly how long. Avoid making the replacement a lengthy tournament everyone must finish. If nobody wants the same activity, you can still spend part of the hour in the same room without a shared task.
If your child wants the original walk later, treat that as a new request. An adult checks the actual day and conditions before confirming again.
Next time, discuss one small alternative before the outing day. It remains a suggestion you can reconsider. Plan B should provide a possible way forward rather than turning every change in the weather into another yes on the whole family’s behalf.
