Reusable straws: return dry pieces to the correct case

3 min read

Reusable straws easily end up loose in a cutlery drawer while their cases go elsewhere. When the household wants to take a set out, both pieces need finding. A child can gather already-cleaned, dry parts and return them to the correct case.

Cleaning needs to be settled first. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for your particular straws; this task puts away prepared pieces. Items not yet cleaned stay outside the clean group even when they look similar.

Find the complete set on the table

Lay straws, cases and any removable parts on a clean, dry surface. Keep different models separate. If a straw has a separate mouthpiece or folding construction, an adult shows how its pieces actually belong together.

The child should not force a loose part into place because its colour seems right. An uncertain set can stay together on a small tray with a note about what is missing. The question remains visible rather than spreading pieces back through the drawer.

Check that the case is ready too

A dry straw should not be enclosed in a damp case. Look inside the case and leave anything still drying at the agreed drying place. An adult demonstrates what you check before treating the pieces as ready.

Putting away can be complete even when one set needs longer to dry. The child leaves that set uncovered and clearly identifies its place. This is better than leaving all the sets in an unsorted heap.

Try the fit without forcing it

Put one prepared straw in its matching case. Close the case normally and open it again. If it does not close easily, check the arrangement or whether two sets have been mixed.

A cleaning brush can have its own home and should enter the case only if it was designed to fit there. Do not bend the brush or straw to make space. Storage should work just as well when the child returns the set next time.

An example with three sets

Helene finds two complete sets and a third straw without its case. She puts the two dry sets into their cases. The third case is at the drying place, so its straw stays alongside in a labelled group. She reports this and returns the complete sets to the drawer.

If many cases look alike

Label the storage space with a small picture or the model's name. Retain any existing markings on the pieces. A system requiring new colour marks on everything may create more work than you need.

Finished means ready sets are together, drying parts are visible and uncertain combinations are reported. In Kroni, call the job “Put away dry straw sets”. The child should not be responsible for declaring cleaning complete when an adult still needs to check it.
