Tea towels in the drawer: add fresh ones at the back
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni3 min read
When freshly washed tea towels always go on top, the household uses the same few repeatedly while the rest stay at the bottom. A small drawer rotation makes the whole clean supply accessible. The child's job is to put away clean, completely dry towels and keep the order clear.
Start with one drawer and one kind of textile. Dishcloths, oven gloves and napkins can remain in their own groups. You do not have to organise the entire kitchen to improve the tea towel space.
Choose the direction together
Decide whether the household will take the top towel from a low stack or the front towel from a row. Pick one direction and mark it simply with “Take here”. A small paper label inside the drawer is enough while you try the arrangement.
Lift the existing clean pile onto the table. Let the child feel what a completely dry towel is like and return damp freshly washed towels to drying. Nobody needs to judge whether the fabric is perfectly folded to use this system.
Fold to fit the space
Fold one towel to match the height and width of the drawer. Use it as an example for the others. Towels in a stack can be folded flat. Towels standing on edge need a shape that stays supported between neighbouring towels.
Put newly washed towels underneath or at the back, depending on your chosen direction. Then replace the older clean pile on top or at the front. Open and close the drawer to check that nothing catches.
Keep used towels separate
A used towel does not return to the clean drawer. An adult shows where the household's used towels wait for washing and how you handle damp textiles at home. The child should not have to smell a towel to discover whether someone has used it.
An example with six towels
Emil finds three clean towels in the drawer and has three freshly washed ones to put away. He removes the old pile, puts the new towels underneath and replaces the old pile on top. The family takes towels from the top. One towel that is still damp stays on the drying rack instead of going into the drawer.
If everything falls over at the first attempt
Reduce the number in the drawer or use a shallow box to support a standing row. A little spare space makes taking a towel easier. An overfilled drawer is difficult to refill correctly even when the child follows the order.
Finished means the drawer contains only dry, clean towels, the chosen direction is visible and the drawer closes easily. In Kroni, you could name the task “Refill tea towels at the back”. A concrete position is easier to follow than a general request for a beautiful drawer.
