Thanks for inviting me, without another promise: help your child decline a visit

2 min read

After a pleasant visit, the friend asks to meet again next Saturday. Your child does not want another visit now. The adult suggests: “Say you cannot do Saturday, but perhaps Sunday.” That sounds friendly, but only moves the question to a day your child does not want either.

Ask whether your child wants an alternative

First clarify whether they want to meet another time, pause visits or simply decline this activity. They need not share the whole reason with their friend. The adult can help make the answer brief and truthful.

Choose between different messages:

Child’s preference Possible answer
No new visit now “Thank you for asking. I do not want to arrange a visit now.”
Wants to meet, not Saturday “I would like to meet, but Saturday does not work.”
Wants another activity together “I do not want that visit, but would enjoy playing at school.”

Use the final sentence only if your child actually wants it. A replacement is not necessary for a no to be kind.

Let adults handle adult arrangements

If parents exchanged the invitation, an adult replies to the other adult. “Thank you for inviting us. We are not arranging another visit this time” can be sufficient. Avoid using your child as messenger for contact the adults began.

If the visit was already confirmed, treat this as changing an agreement and give a prompt message. An unresolved new suggestion is different. Check which situation you actually have.

Avoid inventing a reason

A fictional family event can prompt more questions later. “We are declining this time” requires less follow-up than a story your child must remember. Nor do you need to describe the friend’s behaviour or share your child’s private opinions to explain the reply.

If the friend asks again, your child can repeat the answer without promising a future date. An adult can help when support is wanted. The friend may be disappointed; another unwanted promise need not be the answer.

Afterwards, ask whether the message said what your child meant. Keep ordinary time and support at home without making another visit a condition of being a good friend.
