Before cleaning a windowsill: move agreed items to one tray
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni2 min read
A windowsill holding several small objects takes time to prepare before an adult cleans its surface. The child can have a separate bounded task of moving agreed light objects to one tray. Choose a sill reachable from the floor. The adult handles plants, fragile or heavy objects and the cleaning itself according to material-care guidance.
Agree which objects will move
Look at the sill together. The adult identifies the child's objects and where the tray will stand. Fixed objects remain unless the adult takes them. This job does not involve opening the window, climbing or moving curtain fittings.
The child can record the simple order with a little drawing: one figure on the left, a small empty container in the middle and another figure on the right. Include only relevant objects; there is no need for a plan of the entire window.
Move one object without gathering everything in your hands
Set each object on the tray before taking the next. Keep connected items together. If a container holds contents, leave those inside instead of emptying them onto the tray. Anything the child cannot move as demonstrated goes to the adult's handling.
Arrange objects in one visible layer with space between them. A tray of stacked figures makes returning them awkward. Avoid carrying a full tray around the home; use the agreed stable waiting place near the work area.
Hedda moves two sturdy decorative figures and a small empty container from her section of sill. They stand on the tray in the same order. Her mother moves the plant pot, making the agreed surface accessible for cleaning. Hedda's task ends when the tray is parked and the surface freed.
When returning must wait
Leave the tray in its agreed place with a note identifying the window. Return objects only when the adult says the surface is ready. This can be a separate later step without removing today's preparation ending.
Finished means agreed objects gathered on the tray, familiar order preserved and the selected sill section accessible. “Prepare the windowsill for cleaning” in Kroni describes a concrete helping task. The child does not need to complete the adult's cleaning.
