A bigger percentage, a smaller money discount: calculate both original prices

2 min read

When two discount percentages apply to different original prices, the smaller percentage can produce the larger money reduction. Your child needs the base for each. Give percentage, money discount and final price separate lines.

Calculate both reductions

In a hypothetical example, two separate optional purchases are considered. A has an original price of 100 units and a 20 per cent discount. B has an original price of 40 and a 40 per cent discount. The arbitrary figures do not establish equal usefulness or value.

A's reduction is 100 × 0.20 = 20 units, leaving a final price of 80. B's reduction is 40 × 0.40 = 16, leaving 24. B displays twice the percentage, but its money reduction is 4 smaller.

Check A with 80 + 20 = 100 and B with 24 + 16 = 40. The bigger percentage alone does not show how much is deducted.

Ask which figure the choice needs

A practical snag is saying “I save most with B” while meaning the largest percentage. B has the largest percentage and smallest final payment here, while A has the largest money reduction. Separate and check all three statements.

A discount is also not money paid to your child. Buying A sends 80 out. Do not add 20 to a balance as new income. If your child buys nothing, no discount has created extra money.

For an actual decision, also check that the item meets the intended need. A large money discount on something unnecessary is not a budget reason to purchase it.

Ask your family: “Do we mean the largest percentage, most money deducted or least money to pay?”

Carry the calculation into your family agreement

Kroni can keep track of your child's virtual balance. The app does not transfer money, so any actual purchase is paid for outside it. Agree on what you will record, then check the amount with your child afterwards. Do not deduct a possible cost as though the purchase had already happened. Read about allowance in Kroni.
