A monthly purchase limit does not restart with every purchase

2 min read

A limit on optional purchases throughout a month applies to their combined amount rather than each purchase separately. If your family uses that agreement, write the period and money already spent. Keep actual cash separate from the agreed purchase limit.

Three purchases use the same limit

In a hypothetical example, your child has 80 units of actual money. Your family agrees on at most 50 for certain optional purchases this month. This arbitrary limit applies only to the practice agreement rather than recommending a family rule.

Your child has already spent 12, 19 and 8 within the category. The total is 12 + 19 + 8 = 39. The remaining monthly allowance for purchases is 50 − 39 = 11 units.

A new purchase at 16 costs less than 50 by itself, but combined spending would become 39 + 16 = 55. That exceeds the monthly limit by 5. Your child still has 80 − 39 = 41 units in cash, but not all of it belongs within the agreed purchase limit.

Write when the period starts and ends

A practical snag is interpreting 50 as a limit per shopping trip. Label the sheet “combined for this month” and place every relevant purchase under the same heading.

If the agreement continues next month, the new spending limit is not new income. With no newly received money, your child still has 41 after these purchases. A limit of 50 does not make 50 available when cash is 41.

Also agree what belongs in the category before adding. Avoid introducing another category afterwards simply to alter a previous choice. Any change in your family's agreement should be stated clearly; neither the worksheet nor the app introduces it automatically.

Ask your family: “Does this limit cover one purchase or the entire period, and how much has already been spent within it?”

Clarify what the virtual balance represents

Kroni keeps track using a virtual balance and does not transfer money. Cash your child has received and amounts an adult still owes are different things. This exercise concerns money actually received. Agree how it fits your record so the same amount is not counted both as received and still unpaid. Read about allowance in Kroni.
