Cancelled time for just the two of you: agree another opportunity without rewards

2 min read

You agreed to spend half an hour together after dinner, just the two of you. Your child was going to show you their comic. A necessary meeting means you cannot be available then. Avoid letting the agreement disappear into a busy evening without a message. Say what is changing and what you can actually offer next.

Give the cancellation yourself

“I cannot do our agreed half-hour tonight. The meeting is longer than I planned. I know you were going to show me the comic.” That identifies the agreement. Avoid suggesting your child chose an inconvenient time when you decided it together.

If you do not know when you will finish, do not ask your child to stay awake waiting indefinitely. Give a message that fits your usual evening and discuss later possibilities separately.

Ask what your child wants to keep

The new time need not be identical. Your child may want to show the comic while it is still new or prefer another activity together on a different day.

Separate the questions like this:

Question Possible answer
Is there something you want to tell me tonight? One brief point before the usual bedtime
Would you like to show the whole comic later? Yes, half an hour on Saturday morning
Would you prefer something else together? The child can suggest different content

A brief moment tonight does not automatically replace the half-hour. Say clearly whether you still need to arrange the longer meeting.

Protect the new agreement practically

If Saturday is confirmed, check your own commitments first. Tell others at home which period you have arranged. Avoid making your child responsible for keeping siblings away or reminding you when to start.

Time together is not something your child must earn back after a cancellation. Ordinary contact and help continue even if they are disappointed or do not want to share their comic at the moment you suggest.

When you finally meet, ask whether your child still wants the original activity. There may be a new page or a different idea. You need not begin with a lengthy explanation of the meeting; be present in the time you have now actually agreed.
