Coasters beside the sofa: gather them in one small container
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni3 min read
Coasters are small enough to disappear under magazines, behind cushions or on a side table. When somebody next needs one, it is often somewhere other than beside their drink. A child can make a short collection round and prepare a small set in a container near the sofa.
Agree which places the round covers, such as the coffee table and two side tables. This is not a search of the entire house. Count how many coasters belong in this area before starting, if useful, so a missing coaster can be reported.
Lift objects before pulling out a coaster
If a glass or cup stands on a coaster, the person responsible for the drink moves it first. The child collects free coasters. Do not pull one from beneath a full glass to reach the end of the task.
Loose magazines or papers can be lifted and replaced once the coaster is removed. Personal belongings stay in their agreed places. This round should not become an opportunity to sort someone else's reading material.
Separate ready now from waiting
Inspect the gathered coasters. A dry coaster ready for use goes into the main group. A damp or dirty one has a separate place for drying or cleaning using the household's method for its material.
Do not stack wet coasters tightly onto dry ones. Nor do you need to wash the entire set because one has a mark. Count ready coasters and waiting coasters separately so your record shows where the rest are.
Try a small container
Use an existing shallow box, little dish or the holder supplied with the set. Place ready coasters inside and try taking one. If the child must turn the container upside down, it is too deep or tight for daily use.
Put the container somewhere stable and reachable from the usual seating position. It should not sit behind objects that move every time. Agree that free, dry coasters return here when the table is cleared.
An example with a set of six
Emma finds four coasters on the coffee table and one on a side table. Her dad is still using the sixth. One of the five is damp and goes separately. Four dry coasters are ready in a little dish. Emma reports the two outside the dish; she does not have to wait for them to finish.
If the container keeps filling with other objects
Give the coasters a more specific label or choose a holder suited to their shape. Keys and hair bands need another home. The little container should work without the child clearing unrelated items out first.
Finished means there is an accessible container of dry coasters and a simple report about those missing or waiting. In Kroni, call the job “Collect coasters from coffee and side tables”. Defined places make the round checkable without resetting the whole room.
