Delivery threshold before or after discount: the same basket can total differently

An offer combining a discount with a delivery threshold needs a defined qualifying subtotal. The original subtotal and amount after discount are different numbers. Check calculation order before your child treats an estimate as a purchase budget.
Use the same basket under two possible rules
In a hypothetical example, items total 110 units, a coupon deducts 20, and delivery costs 15 unless the purchase qualifies for free delivery at 100. Everything is invented. We compare two explicit rule sets rather than making claims about an actual shop.
If the threshold is assessed before the coupon, 110 qualifies for free delivery. The final payment is 110 − 20 = 90 units.
If it is assessed after the coupon, the qualifying subtotal is 90. That falls below 100, so delivery is added: 90 + 15 = 105. Identical items and coupon therefore produce a payment 15 higher.
Find the actual rule
A practical snag is seeing 110 in the basket and assuming free delivery without checking what the coupon changes. Highlight the line used for the threshold: before or after the reduction.
With a budget of 95, a total of 90 fits while 105 does not. You cannot choose the more favourable calculation rule unless it belongs to the offer. Request the final payment or read the confirmed order before paying.
Delivery thresholds may have other restrictions, such as which items count. This exercise assumes every item qualifies and the coupon works under either rule set. Update the arithmetic if the actual agreement differs.
Ask your family: “Which subtotal is tested against the threshold, and what is the payment under that precise rule?”
