Empty boxes in the food cupboard: free space without discarding food

3 min read

An empty cereal or biscuit box can stay in the food cupboard long after its contents are used up. The supply looks full from the outside, but the next person finds nothing in the packet. A child can inspect one agreed shelf for empty packaging and make the actual contents easier to see.

The job concerns outer packaging that is genuinely empty. The child does not judge shelf life, discard food or open unopened packets. Prepare a tray for “Not sure” and a container for confirmed empty packaging.

Choose one shelf and keep existing homes

Start on the left and take one open box at a time. Look for inner bags or small packets before treating it as empty. A light box may still contain one portion at the bottom. Contents rather than weight determine this sort.

Return boxes containing food roughly where they stood. You do not need to create a new system for every food item while looking for empty boxes. The child can leave a packet waiting if checking it would require opening it further.

Separate empty from uncertain

Confirmed empty packaging goes into its own container. Packets containing crumbs, leftovers or an unclear inner bag go on the tray for an adult. You should not need a debate about every small remnant to finish the agreed shelf task.

Remove labels or outer boxes only after an adult decides whether their information is still needed for other contents. A bag still in use may need the name and details from the box around it.

Record what is actually used up

Make a short note of the empty products' names if the household wants one. The child can copy words from the packet or draw a recognisable picture. The note means “This is used up”, rather than “This must be bought”.

An adult decides what to replenish. You may discover a spare packet or choose not to replace something. Make reserves visible alongside the appropriate group without opening them.

An example on the breakfast shelf

Henrik finds six open boxes. Four contain food, one is completely empty and one holds a bag he cannot see through. The four return to their places. The empty box creates one line on the note, while the uncertain packet stays on the tray. Behind the empty box he finds an unopened reserve that is now visible.

If a box is empty because its contents moved

Ask before removing it. Perhaps its label is needed for a container elsewhere. Agree how to connect the name with the contents, and let an adult decide when the box can enter the household's usual packaging sort.

The round ends when the shelf is checked, confirmed empty packaging is separated and uncertain packets are gathered for review. In Kroni, limit the task to “Check the breakfast shelf for empty boxes”. A visible note and a small tray are enough to hand over the result.
