Fold a fitted sheet by gathering its corners first

2 min read

A fitted sheet does not need to resemble a shop display to have a useful home in the cupboard. The practical job is to gather its four corners, contain the elastic along one edge and make a bundle that fits the agreed shelf. Start with one clean, completely dry sheet on an empty bed or table.

Find four corners, not four random folds

Look for the seams that shape the corners. With the inside facing you, find two corners along the same long side. An adult can show what one corner seam looks like. That is easier than guessing from the fabric gathered around the elastic.

Tuck one corner into the other so their seams meet. Do the same with the other two corners. Rest both pairs on the surface. The child can work with the fabric supported; there is no need to hold the entire sheet in the air.

Make a useful rectangle

Bring the two corner pairs together into one corner section. Gently smooth the main area outwards. Fold the uneven elastic edge towards the middle until the outer edge is roughly straight. Then fold the bundle to a width that fits the shelf. Slightly rounded edges are fine.

Find the size label before the final fold. Leave it near an edge, or use the size note already assigned to your storage space. Nobody needs to mark the fabric itself. The aim is to select the correct sheet without opening several bundles.

Sofia gathers the corners of the family's smallest sheet on the bed. The elastic makes one side thicker, so she folds that side in first. Her bundle fits the low shelf with its size note visible at the front.

When you lose the corners

Open just the last fold and locate the seam again. Avoid starting three other sheets at the same time. If the elastic or shape makes this fold impractical, agree a simpler bundle with an adult.

Finished means one sheet gathered together, a bundle that fits the shelf and an accessible size label. Use “Fold one clean sheet” in Kroni. Perfect symmetry is not a necessary completion requirement.
