Found at home: a small decision basket that actually gets emptied
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni2 min read
A lone hair tie, bookmark and small game piece may enter random drawers when nobody knows their owners. A small decision basket makes them easier to find again, but only if the family also empties it. Your child's job is returning familiar items to their correct homes and handing ordinary unidentified small objects into agreed adult review.
Give the basket one clear purpose
An adult chooses a small basket and one fixed location. It holds items with unknown owners rather than everything your child prefers not to tidy. A familiar book belonging to a sibling goes to that sibling's agreed home instead.
Give money, keys and private papers directly to an adult. Your child need not open folders or read notes to identify an owner. Report an object that is difficult or unsafe to handle where it lies.
Include where the item was found
Add a brief note when helpful: “found beside the sofa on Tuesday”. Avoid long guesses about who lost it. The location helps the family without presenting an assumption as fact.
Keep different loose objects visible. Do not fill the basket with bags inside bags. If it is already full, ask an adult to complete the decision round rather than creating another basket elsewhere.
Mina finds her brother's book and two small objects without known owners. The book goes directly to his shelf. The small objects receive a note identifying their table location and enter the basket. She has not decided either is rubbish.
Agree who empties it
Your family may choose a regular weekly review with an adult. Known owners receive their items. Objects still unidentified get an explicit further agreement rather than being automatically discarded because a date arrived.
Finished means familiar objects delivered, unknown objects correctly placed with their found location, and the basket's status reported. “Hand in items found at home” in Kroni can describe these checks. Adult review is separate follow-up, allowing your child to finish without having to identify every owner.
