Leave the visit at the agreed time: make departure known before it begins

2 min read

The family is due to leave relatives at seven. Your child first hears this when you stand at the door saying “we are going now”. Meanwhile, the host starts another game. An agreed departure is easier to follow when the child and host know it before the final minutes begin.

Clarify what seven means

Do you mean starting the thank-you then or already travelling home? Check the journey and adult commitments. Tell the host: “We leave by seven, so we will begin finishing a little earlier.”

Your child can hear the same information before arrival:

Point What happens
Before the visit Child knows the agreed departure
A little before seven Brief message to finish the current activity
At seven Family leaves as agreed

Choose a reminder that suits the activity. You need not count down throughout the whole visit.

Follow up your own conversations too

If you keep talking long after your child is ready, say that you delayed departure yourself. Avoid describing the child as slow when they actually waited for adults. The time concerns the whole family’s action, not just the child’s ending.

Adults can give thanks and practical messages before the final minute. Your child can say goodbye ordinarily; they need not complete a lengthy ritual for the family to leave.

Consider extra time between adults

If the host proposes another game, you can reply: “That sounds lovely, but we are leaving as agreed.” Avoid making your child decline on the whole family’s behalf.

If you want to extend the visit, check with those affected. Confirm another finish rather than letting “just a little longer” become indefinite. Your child can want to stay while following the plan adults confirm.

Next time, review whether the reminder came at a useful point. If an activity always starts just before leaving, tell the host the finish earlier or choose a shorter final activity. The aim is not for your child always to want to leave. It is for departure to be expected and for adults to own the plan they arranged.
