An overfilled clothes drawer: let easy closing set the limit

2 min read

A drawer has not been successfully tidied if the child must hold the clothes down while closing it. Use a practical space limit: garments stay inside the edges, the drawer closes normally and one item can be taken out without toppling the rest. Choose one clothing group, such as T-shirts, to give the job a clear end.

Find what is using the space

Put the selected clothing group on the bed. Leave the other drawers alone. Pick out anything that already has a different agreed home, such as pyjamas mixed among the T-shirts. Return those items directly before starting to fold.

Use your usual fold and make the bundles roughly the same width. A broad fold covering the entire drawer makes it hard to judge how many garments will fit. Equally, the child should not have to produce tiny bundles just to squeeze everything in.

Fill without compressing

Return the clothes in the agreed arrangement. Stop when the next garment would cover a group, rise above the edge or require pushing the contents together. Put the remaining clothes in a small pile labelled “Needs a space”. It is not a discard pile.

An adult decides whether that pile needs a reserve location, whether some items fit better in another drawer or whether sizes will be reviewed later. The child can finish today's drawer without making those decisions.

Mikkel has twelve T-shirts, but only nine are accessible without pressure. He places nine in the row and three in the labelled pile. He then takes the middle shirt out. Its neighbours remain standing, and he closes the drawer without holding the contents down.

If the drawer still catches

Remove the last bundle you added and check whether a garment is lying behind the normal storage space. Do not force the drawer shut. If it still catches when no clothes are obstructing it, tell an adult and leave the clothes together in the agreed waiting place.

Finished means accessible clothing, normal closing and a clearly handed-over overflow pile. Use “Make space for my T-shirts in the drawer” in Kroni, with this practical check as the completion point.
