Reusable shopping bags: fold the pile back into one place

3 min read

Reusable shopping bags easily spread between the hallway, kitchen and car. When they are pushed into another bag without order, it is hard to take one without pulling out the whole pile. A child can gather and fold clean, dry bags at one indoor station.

An adult decides where the household wants to keep its supply. Choose a basket, drawer or hook you already own. The child's task does not need to include the car or bags someone is currently using.

Gather only bags that are available

Make a round of the agreed indoor places. Shake loose paper onto a table and hand receipts or personal notes to an adult. Look for food remnants or damp patches too. Keep affected bags away from the clean pile until an adult has decided how to clean them.

You do not have to wash every bag before organising the clean ones. A clearly separated “Waiting to be washed” pile is better than stopping the whole task because one bag is dirty.

Fold according to the bag's shape

Lay a soft fabric bag flat and bring the handles over the middle. Fold the sides inward and then bring up the bottom to make a small package. If the bag has its own storage pouch, use it once you have found a fold that fits.

Stiffer bags with a base panel can often lie flat along their existing folds. Do not force them into the same tiny package as fabric bags. Keep the two types separate in the basket so the child does not have to unpack the whole supply to find a large bag.

Put a small selection at the front

Keep the bags the household uses most within easy reach. Agree a limit that fits the space, such as being able to close the drawer without pushing down. An adult decides what happens to extras; the child should not remove someone else's favourite shopping bag.

An example in a small hallway

Lea finds eight bags indoors. Six are clean, one is damp and one contains a note for her dad. She sets the last two aside. Four fabric bags are folded in a basket, while two stiff bags stand flat behind it. On the next shopping trip, the family can take one of each type.

If the fold is too difficult

Let the child fold the bag once and place it flat in a shallow drawer. An intricate little package is not useful if nobody wants to make it again. Test both taking a bag out and putting it back before settling on your method.

Finished means clean bags are together, dirty or damp bags are separate and one bag can be taken without emptying the rest. This description works as an ordinary task in Kroni, perhaps after the family unpacks a shopping trip.
