The discount covers the item, not delivery: find the correct percentage base

3 min read

When a discount only covers products, delivery must stay outside the percentage calculation. Otherwise the purchase looks cheaper than it will be. Ask your child to mark what the discount covers before calculating the final price.

Keep two amounts separate

In a hypothetical online purchase, an optional item costs 80 units and delivery costs 20. A code gives 20 per cent off the product, but not delivery. Your child has 82 units available. These arbitrary prices and the invented code demonstrate how the discount base works.

The discount is 80 × 0.20 = 16 units. The item therefore costs 80 − 16 = 64. Then add delivery: 64 + 20 = 84 units. Your child needs another 84 − 82 = 2 units to afford the purchase.

If your child instead takes 20 per cent off the full amount of 100, the answer is 80. That has given delivery a discount of 4 units which it does not receive here. Those 4 units change an apparently affordable purchase into one that exceeds the budget.

Draw the product and delivery in separate boxes. Put 80 in the product box and 20 in the delivery box. Only the product box receives a discount. This helps your child see why a code does not promise a particular total price.

Check the conditions and final amount

A realistic snag is another item in a larger basket also being excluded from the discount. Then divide the product subtotal further. If the basket contains an eligible item costing 80 and an excluded item costing 30, the discount base remains 80 rather than 110. With delivery of 20, the total is 64 + 30 + 20 = 114.

The extra example is an exercise rather than a recommendation to buy more products. Remove the excluded item if your child does not want it. Your family does not need to purchase anything to make the calculation work.

Read the amount actually shown before payment and compare it with your sheet. If it differs, investigate the conditions before ordering. An adult helps with anything unclear, and you never assume a code works just because it has been entered.

Ask your family: “Which units receive a discount, and which must be paid in full?”

Carry the calculation into your family agreement

Kroni can keep track of your child's virtual balance. The app does not transfer money, so any actual purchase is paid for outside it. Agree on what you will record, then check the amount with your child afterwards. Do not deduct a possible cost as though the purchase had already happened. Read about allowance in Kroni.
