The hobby session runs late: confirm extra time with the adults
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni2 min read
The hobby session should finish at five. Near the end, the leader asks whether the group wants to continue a little longer. Your child happily says yes. The collecting adult has already organised the afternoon around five. Your child’s wish and your family’s ability to stay longer are different pieces of information.
Check with the organiser how extra sessions are offered. Your child should be able to want more time without becoming responsible for changing adults’ travel arrangements.
Find out whether continuing is optional
Ask whether the usual finish still applies to those needing it. “We are continuing a little” might mean an offer, but can sound as though everyone must stay. A clear message identifies the options that actually exist.
If the organiser suggests a new finish, request an actual time. “A little longer” makes it hard to know whether your family can participate. The adult may need to check the rest of the day.
Confirm only what you can carry out
| Question | Clarification before a new yes |
|---|---|
| How long is the extra part? | Actual finishing time |
| Who can collect later? | An adult who has confirmed availability |
| What applies while checking? | The original arrangement unless another is agreed |
| What will your child hear? | Whether they stay or finish as originally arranged |
Do not turn an unanswered question into an automatic yes. Adults and the organiser need a workable agreement before the new timing applies.
Use a simple example
The leader offers fifteen extra minutes. The collecting adult can wait and confirms a new finish at 5.15. Your child hears that the extra part is arranged. If the adult cannot wait, follow the option agreed with the organiser for the normal finish.
Tell your child: “You wanted to continue. We cannot change the timing today, so we will follow our original arrangement.” This describes the limit without making the wish wrong.
Make the one-off change visible
A later finish today does not change every future session. Tell any other adult expecting you home what has been confirmed. You need not send more proposals after deciding the time.
Afterwards, ask whether the leader regularly offers extra time. If so, agree how your family will respond in future. Spontaneous participation becomes easier when your child’s wish and the adults’ actual availability fit within the same confirmation.
