The right music sheets for lessons: separate current practice from old copies

3 min read

Your child has three copies of the same tune. One carries the teacher’s pencil marks, one belongs to an earlier lesson, and one was printed again when the original seemed missing. Choosing the wrong sheet can mean practising a different passage from the one assigned. Begin by selecting the current version rather than reorganising the entire music collection.

Identify the sheet being used now

Ask your child to show what the teacher actually assigned. Look for a date, page number, bars or a marked line. If a mark is unclear, record a question for the next lesson instead of guessing that the whole piece is homework.

Make a short cover note:

  • Piece: “Little Waltz”.
  • Current page: 2.
  • This week’s passage: from the mark at bar 9 to the next mark.
  • Bring next time: this sheet with the teacher’s comments.

This is an example of a note, not a recommendation about practice time or ability. Follow the task your child was given.

Keep the marked pages together

Give the current sheets one place. Older copies can sit behind a divider marked “earlier”, without deleting your child’s own notes. A loose page used every day can go in a folder or be clipped to the cover note. Avoid hiding useful markings beneath plastic or fresh lines.

Nora chooses the copy with the teacher’s circle around bar 9. Her father notices that the clean copy has the same title but lacks the following page. They keep the complete set at the front of the folder. After practising, Nora puts it in her lesson bag so they do not have to rebuild the set just before leaving.

If your child wants a break, use an agreed finish at a natural stopping point. Having the correct sheet ready does not commit the rest of the evening to music.

Ask when the version is uncertain

A short message could say: “Nora has two versions of page 2. Should she use the one marked at bar 9 this week?” A photo of the relevant passage may clarify the question if the teacher uses that communication channel. There is no need to include the family’s entire schedule.

When the answer arrives, update the cover note once and move the other copy behind the divider. At the next lesson, your child can show the current sheet and any question that remains unanswered.

For the equipment needed on the journey, a between-sessions activity-bag routine may help. Keep the music check specific: correct version, clear passage and the same marked sheet taken back.
