Watercolour brushes after use: clean, shape and leave to dry
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni2 min read
When watercolour painting is finished, the brushes are not necessarily ready for their box. Agree a small closing routine that separates cleaning, drying and storage. An adult first checks the maker's guidance for your particular brushes and demonstrates the method the child will follow. This job concerns ordinary watercolour brushes from today's painting.
Prepare the drying space first
Choose the surface or holder you already use for drying, following the brush guidance. Put its lining or support in place before cleaning begins. This avoids leaving the child holding wet brushes while searching for somewhere to put them.
Also agree how the water container and leftover paint will be handled through your household routine. The child should not have to choose between different paint types or cleaning products. Brushes outside today's watercolour activity follow their own methods.
Follow the same short sequence
Clean one brush at a time with water and any additional treatment agreed from the guidance. Let the child inspect the join between bristles and metal section, where today's colour may also remain. Repeat the agreed cleaning if visible colour remains; vigorous scrubbing or a completely different method is not an extra step the child must invent.
Shape the bristles as demonstrated, then lay or stand the brush to dry as agreed. Leave enough room so its bristles are not squeezed between other objects. Brushes do not go straight back into their closed storage.
Vilde uses two brushes. After cleaning, she shapes both as an adult demonstrated. They rest on the family's agreed drying surface, each in its own space. She places a small “Drying” note beside them, while the box containing already dry brushes remains in its usual location.
When a brush still looks wrong
Bristles that spread out or colour that will not release through the normal agreed treatment go separately to an adult. The child does not have to repair a brush to finish today's job. Give a specific message identifying the brush and what remains.
Finished means today's brushes treated according to the guidance, drying space used and exceptions reported. “Finish watercolours by caring for the brushes” in Kroni can be completed at that point. Returning them to storage happens later, once they are ready under your routine.
