“When will you visit again?” Offer a check-in when the date is unknown

2 min read

The visit to grandparents is over. At the door, they ask when you will return. The adult says “in a couple of weeks” to give a pleasant answer. Your child starts counting days, although nobody checked the date. Interest in meeting again can be expressed without creating a promise you cannot confirm.

Say what you know now

“We would like to arrange another visit, but have no date yet” can suffice. If you do not know whether your family shares that preference, discuss it before replying for everyone. Your child can express personal interest without confirming adults’ calendars.

Separate the information:

What you can say now What needs checking
Thank you for this visit Date of the next visit
We want to stay in touch Who can actually join
An adult follows up Sunday Travel and host availability

A follow-up point differs from another visit date.

Choose one actual follow-up

The adult can agree: “I will consider dates on Sunday and contact you after dinner.” Check both your own family and the host before confirming a date. Avoid sending a calendar date merely because your household is free; the host may have other plans.

Tell your child what you promised: “We will investigate on Sunday, not visit on Sunday.” That prevents two different things becoming confused.

Follow up even without a date

If no time works, say: “We checked, but do not yet have a date that suits both. We will agree another follow-up.” Keep ordinary contact if wanted without presenting a phone conversation as an arranged replacement for the visit.

If grandparents ask your child again, they can answer: “The adult is checking the date.” Your child need not produce another time estimate to make the farewell pleasant.

If you already said “a couple of weeks”, correct it: “I said that too definitely. We had not agreed the date.” Next time, finish with thanks, interest and one small contact agreement. The return visit receives a confirmed time once those involved have actually arranged it.
