A big discount percentage with no original price: compare today's payment

2 min read

A large discount percentage does not alone identify the cheapest item. It applies to an original price that may differ between offers. When your child chooses a purchase, make the confirmed final price and the included contents visible.

Separate promotional text from payment

In a hypothetical example, two notebooks meet the same need. A has a final price of 60 units and says “30 per cent off”. B has a final price of 55 and says “10 per cent off”. The arbitrary amounts and offers are invented, with no delivery or extras included.

Your child pays 5 units less for B: 60 − 55 = 5. A displaying a bigger percentage does not make it cheaper now. The discounts may use different original prices.

Do not deduct another 30 per cent from the 60 either. The final price already follows the offer. Calculating 60 × 0.70 = 42 would introduce another reduction not agreed in this example.

Identify what you actually need to know

A practical snag is choosing A because “thirty is more than ten”. Ask what the numbers are percentages of, then point to the final prices. If the original prices are absent, the percentages alone cannot directly compare the money discounts.

You do not need to guess an original price to choose between these purchases. Check that both notebooks genuinely fit: size, page count and required extras should be comparable. If they are not, price alone is insufficient.

With a budget of 57, B at 55 fits and leaves 2, while A at 60 exceeds it by 3. That provides a concrete basis for deciding. A discount label does not establish affordability.

Ask your family: “Which amount will actually be paid, and is it already the price after the discount?”

Carry the calculation into your family agreement

Kroni can keep track of your child's virtual balance. The app does not transfer money, so any actual purchase is paid for outside it. Agree on what you will record, then check the amount with your child afterwards. Do not deduct a possible cost as though the purchase had already happened. Read about allowance in Kroni.
