Confirmed trade-in on the same purchase: track the old item and new payment

2 min read

A trade-in can reduce the money paid now, but your child also gives up an item. Use only confirmed trade-in value in the budget. The original purchase price is not automatically what someone offers today.

Follow an explicitly invented agreement

In a hypothetical example, a new personal construction kit costs 60 units. A seller offers 20 as trade-in value for your child's old kit, deducted directly from the same purchase. This is a practice term rather than a claim about a shop programme.

The cash payment is 60 − 20 = 40 units. With 45 available, your child can pay and retain 5. They receive the new kit but do not keep the old one; it is handed over as part of the transaction.

Previously paying 35 for the old kit does not make its trade-in value 35. The confirmed value in this agreement is 20. Using the old price would incorrectly calculate a cash payment of 25.

Check what the trade-in means

A practical snag is treating the trade-in as both 20 cash income and 20 discount without following payments. Here no separate cash payment of 20 arrives. There is one payment of 40 and one handover of the old kit.

If value will only be assessed after inspection, 20 is not yet confirmed. Your child cannot use expected trade-in value to declare the purchase affordable before the agreement is clear.

Another arrangement might provide credit for later use. That produces a different budget from an immediate deduction. Check the term rather than applying this exercise's rule to an actual offer.

Ask your family: “What do we give up, what do we pay now, and is the trade-in amount confirmed for this purchase?”

Carry the calculation into your family agreement

Kroni can keep track of your child's virtual balance. The app does not transfer money, so any actual purchase is paid for outside it. Agree on what you will record, then check the amount with your child afterwards. Do not deduct a possible cost as though the purchase had already happened. Read about allowance in Kroni.
