Plus and minus on a receipt: a discount should reduce the total
By Erik Nilsen · Kroni2 min read
A receipt amount is not always an additional cost. Some lines are subtracted while others are added. Your child should read the label and sign before treating every number as a payment.
Follow each line in the right direction
In a hypothetical example, the item subtotal is 68 units. A confirmed discount is shown as minus 8 and delivery as plus 5. The arbitrary amounts and terms are invented, with no other adjustments.
The final amount is 68 − 8 + 5 = 65 units. The discount reduces the subtotal to 60 before delivery increases the total to 65.
Adding all three amounts positively gives 68 + 8 + 5 = 81. The difference from the correct payment is 81 − 65 = 16. The error is twice the discount because your child added 8 instead of subtracting 8.
Label the meaning before adding
A practical snag is noticing 8 while skipping its minus sign. Draw a downward arrow beside “discount” and an upward arrow beside “delivery” on the checking sheet. Ask your child to explain their different directions.
A line labelled “discount 8” may also appear without a visible minus sign in some records. Read how it contributes to the total rather than assuming every receipt follows this worksheet's layout.
The subtotal of 68 is not an additional expense alongside the 65 paid. Use the confirmed actual payment for the money record. The worksheet's intermediate calculation should explain the total rather than duplicate it.
If the total does not agree, investigate an extra line or another discount before correcting anything. Guessing can create tidy but incorrect arithmetic.
Ask your family: “Which lines increase the payment, and which make it smaller?”
Carry the calculation into your family agreement
Kroni can keep track of your child's virtual balance. The app does not transfer money, so any actual purchase is paid for outside it. Agree on what you will record, then check the amount with your child afterwards. Do not deduct a possible cost as though the purchase had already happened. Read about allowance in Kroni.
